What's On

The inhabitants of the Canary Islands are in general deeply devoted to religion and traditions – and the Lanzaroteños do not make an exception – which explains that the majority of fiestas being celebrated on the island is associated with the cult of saints, in particular patron saints of the island, towns or villages. Some are related to a special event, like the beginning of the summer, or a ‘miracle’ like it happened in the village of Mancha Blanca (where the salvation from being devastated by a lava flow was attributed to the Virgin of the Volcanoes). The origins of most of these fiestas date back centuries.

Fiestas are usually celebrated with large and colourful processions, carrying an image of the saint from the church to a revered place, or fancy-dress parades and some of them can even last from several days to one or two weeks (which is the case for the carnival festivities). Besides much entertainment and fun for young and old, these crowd-pulling fiestas always offer a full programme of traditional activities, folklore performances, sporting events, such as lucha canaria wrestling and stick fighting competitions, and much more.

On this page find out more about some of the most important and most colourful events in Lanzarote and when and where they are happening... Should you be on the island at the time of one of these fiestas, don’t miss out on this opportunity to see how locals celebrate!

Did you know where the word
'Carnival' comes from?

It derives from the Italian carne vale - meaning 'farewell to meat' - the idea being that this is a final excuse for feasting and frivolous behaviour before the fasting and self-denial for Lent.
