Costa Teguise

About 9 km (6 miles) northeast of Arrecife lies Costa Teguise – after Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca the third largest and the newest tourist resort on the island – where we start our exploration tour of the north. Built entirely on former lava fields and saltpans, the development of this resort, in whose original planning César Manrique played a big part, only started in the late 1970’s with the construction of the luxury five-star Gran Melia Salinas hotel.

With low-rise holiday developments, apartment blocks and bungalows, a golf course, a marina, commercial centres, where most of the shops, restaurants and entertainment can be found, and a water park located at the outskirts, this large resort presents itself smart and modern and it once attracted a very distinguished clientele, with King Juan Carlos of Spain and some other celebrities owning private villas here.

Still growing, Costa Teguise is today like any other tourist resort on the island. It boasts five attractive beaches with white sand – the largest and most scenic of which is Playa de las Cucharas, very popular with windsurfers because of its steady breezes – and a full range of water sports.
