La Caleta de Famara (north coast)After for about 6 km (3.7 miles) on a road, which is often covered with sand that the wind keeps blowing in your eyes, we approach the picturesque fishing village of La Caleta de Famara at the north coast. It was here, where César Manrique spent some happy teenage years before he volunteered in the Spanish Civil War. Tranquil and idyllic, this village with only one asphalted street is an ideal place to spend some time to relax and enjoy a nice meal in one of the two recommendable seafood restaurants available here.
La Caleta marks the beginning of Playa de Famara, a long beach with white sand – many consider it the most beautiful on the island – stretching along the foot of the rugged cliffs of Risco de Famara, which can rise up to 600 m (1,970 ft), a popular starting point for hang-gliders. The road from La Caleta to Famara, a modest settlement with white and green bungalows and some basic tourist accommodations, is often covered with sand, and from time to time, it even needs a sweep, as the sand tends to stay on.
