The Canary Islands are not known for any special diseases and the worst you can get is a hangover from too much partying. But take also your precautions not to risk sunburn or dehydration! Medical insurance is strongly advised, even though EU citizens can obtain a refund of most medical costs by using form E111 (available from health offices in your country). Make sure you get this form before you leave your home country. There are many English-speaking doctors and dentists. Your hotel will always be able to recommend one. The local chemists (Farmacia), recognisable by a green cross sign, will have the most well-known proprietary brands of analgesics and popular remedies, but should you need to take any special medication, then bring it with you a sufficient supply. Minor medical problems can often be solved at the chemist and there is always one open after hours in each area. The location of the duty chemist is indicated on every chemist’s door. Those who need dialyses can find a centre in Puerto del Carmen that provides all the necessary treatment and also offers high quality accommodation. However, you must make advance arrangements before leaving home. • TIP • Medical insurance is strongly advised, even though EU citizens can obtain a refund of most medical costs by using form E111 (available from Health Offices in your country). |
