Welcome to the Lanzarote Travel GuideLanzarote – an island of intriguing beauty!
Lanzarote – the most northerly of all the Canary Islands – is full of striking contrasts. Although the whole Canary archipelago is volcanic, it is on Lanzarote, where its – geologically speaking – recent volcanic history is most evident and most accessible, with lunar landscapes in all shapes and colours covering almost all the island and nearly 300 volcanic peaks, the majority of which are extinct but some are just taking a nap…! Yet, Lanzarote is not a desert island, on the contrary, it is an island full of life, with its own peculiar and unmistakable character. Many Lanzaroteños did not give up their island after the tremendous volcanic eruptions in the 18th and early 19th century, which devastated their fertile land, but instead they found an ingenious way of cultivating the barren lava fields and made every effort to preserve their natural heritage, culture and traditions. Lanzarote is also a fantastic holiday island, with many picturesque beaches, featuring golden sand and crystalline waters, attractive, laid-back holiday resorts, offering all modern comfort, and a superb climate all year round, with pleasant winters - daytime temperatures in January are rarely below 21°C (70°C) – and an average rainfall of 16 days per year!
Lanzarote is also a unique example of how one single man can have so much influence on its aspect that one could say that César Manrique ‘sculpted’ Lanzarote! Lanzarote’s greatest and internationally renowned son, left his signature everywhere on the island… as sculptor, painter, architect and environmentalist. It is also largely his responsibility that tourism on Lanzarote developed within certain aesthetic guidelines and… above all… without spoiling the island’s landscape heritage, customs and traditions. Except for one hotel building in Arrecife, all buildings on the island are low-rise – “not taller than a Canary palm” – and you won’t find any advertising hoardings at the roadsides! But what you will find at the roadside are fascinating wind chimes and sculptures and pretty villages in a symphony of white and green! Lanzarote Island… fascinating and strikingly beautiful, with everything a discerning traveller – if families, couples or singles – would look for! Come and get the Lanzarote feel!
