Dangers & Nuisances

Lanzarote is a very safe holiday island, as the crime rate is relatively low here, even in Arrecife, the capital and biggest city of the island. Well aware of the negative impact of adverse crime figures on the tourist industry, local authorities and the police keep a high profile to make sure that it stays that way too, so that visitors to the island can feel secure at any time during their holidays.

Pickpockets & Bagsnatchers

Yet, like anywhere else, there is always a risk of petty crime that you should be aware of and take your precautions. Don’t leave personal belongings in a parked car and don't take valuables to the beach; leave them in the hotel safe. Keep ground floor windows without protecting bars shut at all times. Be vigilant with handbags and camera equipment and keep them always close to you. If you are the victim of theft, you must report it to the police and get a report copy, if you want to make an insurance claim. If your passport is stolen or lost, you must contact your consulate to get a replacement issued.

Sunburn

Finally, regardless of the time of the year that you choose to visit Lanzarote, don't be fooled by cool breezes – even on cloudy days! Remember you are after all next to the Sahara and you will burn quickly – particularly if you are fair skinned and don't see a lot of sun back home. Put on a sun lotion with a high protection factor (every 1.5 hours), as in this particular case, too much is better than not enough!
