Communications in Lanzarotenternational telephone calls can be made from almost anywhere on the island. The distinctive blue booths are not easy to miss. You have the choice of using coins, phone cards (tarjetas telefónicas) and sometimes even credit cards. If making an international call from Lanzarote, dial 00 first, then your country code (Great Britain 44), followed by the area code (omitting the first 0) and then the number you want to reach.
The country code for Lanzarote is the same as Spain (34) followed by a nine digit number starting with 928.Telephone calls made from bars, restaurants and hotels are usually a great deal more expensive than the street pay booths. The cheap rate for international calls is the night tariff from 22.00 to 08.00 hrs and all day Sunday. All major mobile phone companies have roaming agreements with the Spanish operators, such as the worldwide group Vodafone or Telefónica MoviStar. Before you come to the island make sure you have activated this service, otherwise it won’t work (unless your company provides automatic activation of the roaming service). Once in Lanzarote you can switch your mobile phone to automatic selection or you choose manually the company you want to operate with. Ask your service provider about the price of the calls, as you tend to pay not only for the calls you make, but also for those you receive. Post offices are open from 09.00 to 14.00 hrs and close an hour earlier on Saturdays. There are no telephones in post offices! They do have stamps but so do tobacconists and other shops that sell postcards. Post boxes are yellow in colour but the service is quite laid back. If you have important or urgent mail, we recommend you use one of the international courier companies. Internet Cafés.There are a number of Internet cafés on the island and access costs around 5,00 Euro per hour. If you are travelling with your laptop and need access to a phone connection, be wary of using hotel room outlets - the PABX system could destroy your processor. Jacks like those used in the US are standard and make connecting your modem simple. |
